"It is the oldest story in the world - in the struggle between the sword and the shield, history shows us that the sword always wins."

The Sword Excalibur is a universal symbol of truth, signifying 208 Squadron's flying instructional role. It also has connotations of knights in battle, reflecting both the Squadron's original role as a fighter unit in WWI (both as Naval 8 Squadron and 208 Squadron) and its current role in training the combat pilots of the future for both Services. The name 'Excalibur is drawn from the Welsh 'Caliburn', thus linking 208 Squadron with its current home in Anglesey, North Wales.

The 'Eye of Horus' (or 'Flying Shufti') forms the hilt, reflecting 208 Squadron's unique history in the Middle East, and matches the symbol emblazoned on the tail fin of the Squadron's Hawk aircraft. The sword is mounted on the traditional 'elongated diamond' Course patch, which bears the colours of 'the Sky and the Sand,' reflecting the Squadron's history as a desert reconnaissance unit. The faded blue also signifies 208's Squadron's links with its distant Naval past.
